Philippe Clement told he'll get Rangers transfer backing as Barry Ferguson names one signing who should be on agenda

Barry Ferguson anticipates that new Rangers manager Philippe Clement will be backed this January - and he should be looking close to home for one of his first signings.

The Light Blues showed powers of recovery against Hearts, striking twice late on to compete a 2-1 comeback win. It means the Belgian is undefeated over three games against Hibs, Sparta Prague and the Jambos, but criticism of those brought in by predecessor Michael Beale in the summer transfer market continues to arrive.

There was big backing provided by the board for the Londoner in the summer but former captain Ferguson reckons the cheque book will be out again in January. He told Go Radio that a few fresh faces will be on hand to boost Clement's array of weapons. He said: "I know money might be tight because a lot of money was spent in the summer. The new manager coming in, I think they will try to find money from somewhere ad bring in maybe two or three that the manager likes.

"It freshens the squad up as well. January is a tough window as generally the players you are going for haven't played much football either. But I am sure the Rangers board will try everything in their power to try and help the new manager."

One player Ferguson believes should sign on the dotted line is Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland. The striker has been a major hit since signing for Hearts last season and scored against Rangers on Sunday, with the former midfielder in no doubt over his credentials.

He added: "I was so impressed with Lawrence Shankland. Take away the goal, his link-up play, build-up play, I think as he's got older he's got better. I would be enquiring and asking what is the script how long has he got left on his contract. What would it cost?
