Philippe Clement has been in the Rangers job for only a month but the progress he’s made in that short space of time is well beyond what the Ibrox support could have hoped for.

Yes, there is still a long way to go before the new manager gets this team to the level he believes it can reach but the early signs are so encouraging, particularly when you see the mess he inherited. Three defeats in the first seven league games - two of them at Ibrox to Celtic and Aberdeen. Smashed out of the Champions League qualifiers by PSV Eindhoven and then beaten by Aris Limassol in the Europa League with a performance that was truly worrying.

Players’ morale at rock bottom. Fury in the stands as the fans watched a team playing without a purpose or identity. This was the situation Clement walked into but right from day one, there was something about the guy. He’s quiet, but when he speaks people listen. You see it in his press conferences and you can bet your bottom dollar it’s the same when he talks to the squad behind closed doors.

He has an aura that sends out a ‘don’t mess with me’ message but he does not seem to rule by fear. Instead, he has got players and fans on board by not only getting results, but by the manner in which Rangers are doing it. From middle to front they are energetic, asking questions of the opposition and creating so many chances. The full-backs, who looked so shorn of confidence before Clement’s arrival, have had a new lease of life and are once again bombing down the touchline to deliver quality into the box. James Tavernier, in particular, has had a new lease of life under the new regime.
