Phil Foden named as Premier League Player of the Year as historic Man City achievement awaits

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been named the Premier League Player of the Year for the 2023/24 season.

The 23-year-old England international has enjoyed a stellar season at the Etihad and his 17 goals and eight assists have put Pep Guardiola's side on the brink of a record-breaking fourth straight Premier League title.

Upon accepting the award, Foden, named the Football Writers' Association's Player of the Year earlier this week, said: “To win this award is an achievement that I am extremely proud of.

“The Premier League is acknowledged as the greatest league in the world, and it is a pleasure to have been nominated with so many other great players who have all enjoyed special seasons for their clubs.

“Overall, I’ve been very happy with the way I have played this season and really pleased that I have been able to contribute with the goals and assists throughout the season.

“I’d like to thank all of the City staff, coaches and especially my teammates because without them this wouldn’t be possible. And I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me as the award means a lot.”

Manchester City head into the final weekend of the season two points ahead of Arsenal and know they will lift a sixth Premier League title of the Guardiola era if they can beat West Ham United at the Etihad on Sunday.

Few players have been as instrumental this season as Foden, who has scored 12 goals in the 19 Premier League games since City were beaten at Aston Villa back in December. His contributions have included hat-tricks against Brentford and Aston Villa, as well
