Pep Guardiola makes Man City point about statue unveiling

Pep Guardiola praised Manchester City for honouring three club legends ahead of a statue being unveiled outside the Etihad.

On the morning of the Champions League game, an artwork celebrating the contributions of Mike Summerbee, Franny Lee and Colin Bell will be unveiled outside the Etihad. The work is to complement the statues of Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero on the other side, reflecting another golden era for the club.

Guardiola is intent on writing more history with the Treble winners but appreciates how the club are showcasing their former glories as well. "It shows how good the club is with three legendary, unbelievable people," he said.

"Mike Summerbee will be there and he will be incredibly satisfied with the recognition not just for him but for Colin Bell and Franny Lee. It will be perfect for all the families. How many clubs have this thing and don't do it so we are incredibly fortunate to do it for them."

David Williams-Ellis, a classically-trained sculptor with a global reputation whose works include a D-Day memorial above Gold Beach in Normandy, has spent the last few years attempting to capture the best of three of City's best players from the late 1960s and early 1970s era. “It’s been an extraordinary last two years, working on this project that celebrates these players from a great era in Manchester City’s football history," he said.
