Pep Guardiola gives Ederson injury update after Man City blow

Manchester City will have to wait to assess the extent of Ederson's injury after the goalkeeper limped out of their Premier League game at Newcastle.

The Brazilian was called into action to try to prevent Sean Longstaff from converting Alexander Isak's cross in the opening minutes and collided with the Newcastle star. He needed treatment to continue and City were not pleased to see the offside flag belatedly go up for the attack.

Despite his best efforts to carry on, Ederson was shaky again as soon as the game restarted and Pep Guardiola called for Stefan Ortega to take his place. The German conceded two goals in the first half but was able to see the team come back to record an important 3-2 victory that takes them to within two points of Liverpool.

Guardiola saw Ederson moving with difficulty after the game, although is hopeful that his No.1 will be fit for the next game in a fortnight's time if he has only suffered a knock. Ortega's status as the starting goalkeeper in the cups means that January 31 is the date that Ederson needs to be aiming for if he is to avoid missing a match with the issue.

"He had a big knock," said Guardiola. "I didn't speak with the doctors. He didn't walk well as he left the pitch but if it is just a knock he will be fine because we have a break for 10 days. If there is some damage, the doctors will tell me."
