Penalty agony and late drama sends Broxburn Athletic out of the Scottish Cup
Broxburn Athletic suffered Scottish Cup heartbreak after they twice lost the lead in injury-time before being knocked out on penalties by 10-man Buckie Thistle.
A packed Albyn Park welcome nearly 1200 spectators and they were treated to a game that produced little until it suddenly became a thrill-a-minute cup classic.
The East of Scotland Premier Division leaders were given a huge boost on 21 minutes when Scott Adams saw a second yellow for a needless challenge on Brox skipper Nick Locke, having been booked just a few minutes earlier.
Despite having the numerical advantage, the hosts were unable to really lay a punch of the Highland League outfit in what was shaping up to be a drab affair. Jack Murray headed wide for Buckie with the best chance of the first half while the action didn't spice up until much later after the break.
Buckie's Max Barry cut inside and fired an effort that was saved by Bob Watt in the Broxburn goal while Athletic had penalty shouts turned away by whistler Greg Soutar.
With the game seemingly headed for a goalless 90 minutes, the Brox finally carved open the Highlanders' back line with Marky Munro's ball across goal being turned home by Errol Douglas at the back post on 81 minutes.
Then, well, pretty much everything happened. Josh Peters had a goal disallowed for offside as Thistle thought they'd levelled things up before Sam Pugh fired an effort over the bar.
They kept flinging everything at Athletic and it finally paid off. To the bewilderment of almost everyone in the ground, Soutar found seven minutes of injury-time - and Thistle used every last second of it as Peters drilled home a dramatic equaliser to send the game into extra-time.
