Celtic's second penalty leaves Motherwell boss 'baffled' after ref seminar

Stuart Kettlewell was “baffled” by Celtic’s second penalty and says a refereeing seminar pointed out why a similar situation shouldn’t result in a spot-kick.

Motherwell were penalised for a tug on Mikey Johnston’s shirt by Calum Butcher in 84 minutes, which saw David Turnbull give them the lead.

Goalkeeper Liam Kelly had saved a 66th-minute penalty from Luis Palma after Bevis Mugabi was judged to have fouled Oh.

Jon Obika levelled for Motherwell just minutes after Turnbull’s strike, but the awarding of the later penalty irked Kettlewell.

And he says there might have been a case for Greg Taylor being shown a red card on a VAR intervention for a foul on Blair Spittal in 70 minutes that left the winger with a nasty gash on his leg.

Kettlewell said: “I’ve got my opinion, like everybody else, but what I think I’ve been really consistent on is if the officials are telling me something, then I go and sit for two-and-a-half hours in a room with chief executives and one or two managers from around the country, that exact incident came up in one of the clips.

“There were conversations surrounding ‘is the player getting on the end of it’, not every contact in the box is a penalty etc, and from the angle I’ve seen, Calum Butcher is adamant that he doesn’t pull the jersey, that his palm is actually resting round about the waist.

“I was told, and argued on this one, but my understanding was that wouldn’t be given as a penalty – but lo and behold, when [referee] Steven McLean goes over to the monitor, I think we all know what’s coming at that point.

“Everyone will have their own views on it, guys from Celtic will probably think it’s justified, but I think it’s incredibly soft, I really do.
