Penalty against Rangers sparks Scottish Masters rage as ref hit with claim over 'softest ever' spot kick

It may be a bit of fun, but try telling that to the ex-pros doing battle on the blue Braehead carpet.

The Scottish Masters is underway and there's been plenty of needle between the old timers in the opening two games so far. Record Sport's own Ryan Stevenson was rolling around the floor with Celtic''s Kelvin Wilson during the Hoops' 2-1 victory. Bot were sent to the sin bin with wry smiles on their faces.

There was little love lost when Rangers and Hibs went at it either. The Gers led 2-0 through Graham Dorrans and Pedro Mendes, but Ivan Sproule pulled one back for the Hibees, who equalised in controversial circumstances. Light Blues keeper graeme Smith was adjudged to have felled Grant Holt when coming out to collect the ball, and whistler Des Roache pointed to the spot. The big man stepped up and dispatched to square things up with seconds to go. Showing his frustration, Alan Hutton booted the ball towards the official at full-time.

And Rangers defender Maurice Ross didn't hold back in his post-match assessment. He said: "I think it's the softest I've ever seen. But the game's on the TV and the referee wants a bit of the limelight. But I don't think it was a penalty at all.

Ross' night has been cut short due to a hamstring injury. He had a nibble at Marvin Bartley with a late tackle and the Queen of the South boss wasn't best pleased. But Ross stayed on the deck and signalled to the bench that he was done.

"I got a bit over exuberant out there. I've over extended and pulled my hamstring," Ross said. "He (Marvin) is a big string boy but he give sit out so he can handle it, he's a strong boy.
