Paul Scholes thinks Mason Mount isn't starting for Manchester United because he upsets the balance of the team and his presence alongside Bruno Fernandes leaves the midfield too open. Mount was Erik ten Hag's first signing of the summer transfer window and he joined from Chelsea for £55million plus £5m in add-ons.

The 24-year-old made his name as a creative midfielder during his time at Stamford Bridge, but he was brought to Old Trafford to play in a deeper midfield role and he was seen as the natural successor to Christian Eriksen.

Although Mount started the first two league games of the season, the midfield looked unbalanced and he picked up a hamstring injury in the defeat against Tottenham, which sidelined him for around five weeks.

Mount has struggled to nail down a regular starting place since then and Scholes has shared his thoughts on the player's difficult first few months at United in an interview with the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel.

"I think he'd to play where Bruno Fernandes plays. I think the manager signed him as an attacking midfield player," Scholes said.

“But it upsets the balance of the team and upsets the legs he has in midfield. I really think he wanted to play him with Fernandes but the two of them playing in the team, it just doesn’t seem to be working now.

“It’s difficult to make a case for Mason because he’s not played enough games, so trying to come on here and say ‘he should be playing’, I don’t know, because he hasn’t played. If he has a run of five, six, seven, eight games you can judge that a little bit more.
