'Ominous' - Ex-QPR and Reading forward gives his verdict on Sheffield Wednesday's promotion push

Sheffield Wednesday's squad depth is the best in League One. That is the view of ex-Queens Park Rangers and Reading forward Jamie Mackie.

Darren Moore's Owls side dug deep to grind out three points at home to Charlton Athletic yesterday. Moore made three inspired substitutes just before the hour mark, throwing on George Byers, Tyreeq Bakinson and Lee Gregory.

The changes helped swing things Wednesday's way as Bakinson grabbed a late winner after great work from Josh Windass. Bakinson powered a header past Jojo Wollacott to wrap up the Owls' third straight win across all competitions.

Speaking on ITV's English Football League highlights show last night, pundit Mackie said: "I think they have got the strength in depth in the division. They would probably be the outstanding team for that.

"They have got Michael Smith who scored 19 goals (last season) and is a really good League One striker and he is not really playing at the moment so it is ominous for the others I feel."

Victory nudged Wednesday up to second in the embryonic League One table. "It was a tough game," reflected Moore.

"I said to the boys everybody would be needed because I knew Charlton are on the up and in the conditions I knew I'd make changes (during the game). Even though the subs will take the plaudits for seeming to change the momentum of the game, everybody played a part because we had to dig in and really find that win.

"We just didn't seem to have the energy today. I said we needed 20 or 30 per cent more energy. It got to 60 minutes and I thought it just wasn't there so we made three changes straight away.

"We spoke about the subs giving us some energy and certainly Tyreeq, George (Byers) and Greggers (Lee Gregory) coming on gave us that impetus.
