Oborevwori’s N10m gift ‘ll boost Delta Queens’ Champions League efforts, says Anazia

Delta Queens

Director General of Delta State Sports Commission, Chris Anazia, has described as a ‘major boost’ the N10 million gift by Governor Sherrif Oborevwori to players of the newly crowned champions of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Delta Queens FC.

Delta Queens came from behind to dethrone Bayelsa Queens 2-1 in the final match of the 2023 NWFL Super Six on Sunday, a victory, which saw the women league trophy return to Delta State after 11 years.

Delta State First Lady, Tobore Oborevwori, received the league trophy at the Stephen Keshi Stadium. And soon after, the players, coaches and supporters headed straight to the residence of Governor Oborevwori for trophy presentation.

Oborevwori, who also had the pleasure of having the immediate past Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, around, was so excited receiving his first piece of silverware after just two weeks in office.

He immediately announced a cash reward of N10 million for the team, which makes it a total of N20 million for the ladies within a few minutes, as they had earlier claimed the N10 million prize for winning the league.

By winning the title, Delta Queens are Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Champions League via a WAFU qualifying window in August.

The last major achievement by Delta Queens was in the days of Governor James Ibori between 1999 and 2007. They were double champions then, winning the Super Six title in Umuahia, Abia State in 2004, and a year later, won the FA Cup in Abuja.

Speaking with The Guardian, yesterday, Anazia said: “I am so excited with the achievement of Delta Queens, and the immediate cash reward by the governor. It is a sign of more good things to come because we have won all trophies in sports except football in the last 11 years.
