Nick Freeman has twice won promotion under manager Gareth Ainsworth and is hoping for more at Gillingham

Nick Freeman knows exactly what a Gareth Ainsworth promotion-winning team looks like.

The new Gillingham signing believes the foundations are already in place for another successful campaign.

Freeman has reunited with Ainsworth at Priestfield after enjoying two promotions under the manager during their time together at Wycombe Wanderers, helping the Chairboys climb from League Two to the Championship.

Now, after earning a contract following a successful trial spell with the Gills, the versatile 30-year-old believes the same ingredients that brought success at Wycombe are already evident in Ainsworth's current squad.

“I think, first of all, [you need] a really good environment and a good culture," said Freeman.

“Good lads all buying into what the coaching staff want, which we all have already. It's just about consistency. You're going to go through bumpy roads during the season.

“It's about how you get out of them and not let your heads go. Be positive and be there for each other. It's a long, long season, so it's just about being as consistent as possible but also coming out of those ruts and not letting your head go.

“We'll give everything this season and we'll see where we go.

“It's just a really good group. Everyone's really positive. Everyone gets on with each other. It's just a really nice feel-factor environment and culture at the club, which is really, really enjoyable to be a part of.”

Having experienced promotion under Ainsworth twice before, Freeman says the manager has a knack of building squads that all pull in the same direction.

He said: “I think it was just getting a group of lads who are good people all driving and going in the same direction, buying into what the gaffer wants, which they always did.
