Newcastle won’t pay £60m for Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Although Eddie Howe has Callum Wilson, Joelinton, Chris Wood and Dwight Gayle to lead the line, Newcastle United could bring in another striker this summer – Wilson has struggled with injuries, Joelinton often plays in midfield, Wood has been short of goals and Gayle has been short of playing time.

Newcastle have been linked with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but the 25-year-old is coming off the back of a below-par injury-laden season, so there might be better options out there. Luke Edwards of the Telegraph says Everton have upped Calvert-Lewin’s asking price to £60m, so a deal should be dead in the water.  

The England international has made 191 appearances in all competitions since joining Everton from Sheffield United in 2016, scoring 58 goals with 18 assists. Calvert-Lewin has scored just five goals in 17 games this season, however, and spent much of the campaign sidelined with injury. The 25-year-old, who earns £72k-per-week, has scored only twice since August, so he had the worst year on Merseyside.

Newcastle would never break their club transfer record to sign an out-of-form striker who’s had injury problems, so this story won’t go anywhere. Howe may still bring in another centre-forward, but Calvert-Lewin would be bad business.
