Newcastle 'will definitely make' big signing at St James' Park

Newcastle United are ‘definitely going to sign a striker’ in what remains of the current transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies have successfully strengthened their defensive options this summer but have so far been frustrated in their attempts to add some additional firepower to their forward line.

Last season, Callum Wilson was Newcastle’s top scorer in the Premier League with eight goals despite starting just 16 games due to injury problems.

And January signing Chris Wood only managed to find the back of the net on two occasions in his 17 top-flight outings for the North East outfit following his £25 million switch from Burnley.

Those uninspiring tallies saw Newcastle attempt to bring in Hugo Ekitike from Stade Reims before the youngster opted to join Paris Saint-Germain instead, forcing Eddie Howe to move onto alternative targets.

However, Newcastle are yet to make a formal offer for another striker despite being credited with an interest in several players.

Howe has admitted that he is ‘still looking’ for one or two more attacking acquisitions who can make a difference in the final third of the pitch, though, indicating that there will be some activity at St. James’ Park before September’s deadline.

Chelsea’s Armando Broja is one forward who has been heavily linked to Newcastle, yet Jones believes the Blues ‘need him’ at the moment due to their lack of options upfront.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “It’s tough with Broja because Chelsea haven’t got any depth at the moment, they need him, and they can’t let him out.

“So, it’s a bit frustrating for clubs that are interested in him. I mean, Newcastle are definitely going to sign a striker, I’m not in really any doubt about that.”
