Newcastle 'might return' for £60m star 'on deadline day' at St James' Park

Newcastle United ‘might return’ to the negotiating table and look to lure Leicester City star James Maddison to St James’ Park on the final day of the transfer window, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs when speaking to GIVEMESPORT last week.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has already spent close to £60million on making improvements to his squad, but he could welcome further fresh faces ahead of the September 1 deadline.

Newcastle have been frustrated in their attempts to sign Maddison as they have had two bids – with the latest totalling £50million – rejected by Leicester.

It is understood that the 25-year-old’s current employers are unwilling to do business unless a proposal worth £60million is lodged.

Jacobs has recently claimed that Newcastle have no plans to reenter negotiations over Maddison unless Leicester dramatically lower their valuation.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been ‘very seriously considering’ a move for the attacking midfielder, but Leicester have upped the ante in their attempts to keep him on their books.

That is because, with Maddison into the final two years of his £110,000-per-week deal, they have opened negotiations over a new contract.

Although Newcastle are unwilling to meet Leicester’s asking price, Jacobs has refused to rule out the possibility of the Magpies testing their Premier League rivals’ resolve late in the transfer window.

The journalist believes the Tyneside giants could return to the King Power Stadium with a third proposal if they struggle to draft in an alternative attacking midfielder over the coming days.
