Newcastle will 'probably' now look to add one more player at St James’ Park

Newcastle United could ‘bid for a central midfielder’ ahead of the transfer window closing, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies recently pulled off a club-record signing by bringing Alexander Isak in from Real Sociedad in a £63 million deal but may still make further additions ahead of September’s deadline.

Manager Eddie Howe prioritised improving his defensive options at the start of the summer, bringing in goalkeeper Nick Pope and defenders Matt Targett and Sven Botman.

And the 44-year-old tactician has now been able to bolster his ranks in the final third of the pitch with the acquisition of Isak, who registered 44 goals and eight assists in 132 appearances for Sociedad.

However, Newcastle are still to recruit in the middle of the park during the current window despite being heavily linked with several players.

The North East outfit reportedly saw a £50 million offer for Leicester City’s James Maddison turned down while Lucas Paqueta was also said to be on their radar prior to West Ham’s advances.

With Jonjo Shelvey sidelined for several months through injury, it’s an area of the pitch that Howe may well be focussing his attention on in the final days of the summer market.

Howe previously admitted prior to Isak’s arrival that he is still looking for two players, indicating that there could be one more new signing still to come.

And Jones has informed GiveMeSport that there is still a ‘probable scenario’ where Newcastle sign a midfielder.

He said: “Throughout the summer, I’ve been told that there’s still a probable scenario where they bid for a central midfielder as well. So, I’m not going to rule that out.”
