Newcastle's Callum Wilson hoped for another striker in January but backs Chris Wood

Callum Wilson has admitted Newcastle United “needed” to sign another striker in the January transfer window.

The Newcastle striker has revealed his comeback from a calf injury is “moving slow” with no definite comeback date set.

That has left Eddie Howe’s side with new £25m signing Chris Wood up front and Dwight Gayle as back up, with the side desperately in need of more goals.

Howe tried to add Reims' teenage striker Hugo Ekitike to the squad for £33m and also missed out on a loan move for Jesse Lingard.

Newcastle filled gaps in their defence and their star signing was Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for £40m, as they forked out a total of £91m including potential bonus payments.

Wilson said: “I was looking forward to the club bringing in another striker as well as Chris Wood.

"I think we needed one more as well. Unfortunately, we didn't get that in the attacking area.

“But I back Woody from now until the end of the season and also back myself so when I do get fit and we end up playing together and helping the team, it's all about the team at the end of the day.

“We’ve not signed any huge price tags, but at this point in the season [and] where we are in the league, you need people who are going to dig in and fight for the cause.”

Wilson says he will welcome the competition up front when Newcastle strengthen in the summer adding: “When we're getting strikers in the door and when you're hearing about strikers, I just think it's only going to benefit the team in a positive way so the more the merrier.

"Bring the competition in the door because it is nice and it does push you. It does take you to that next level and I think it brings out the best in you.
