"I heard": Journalist drops surprising Bruno position claim at Newcastle

Transfer insider Dean Jones has claimed that Newcastle United need Bruno Guimaraes to become an “all-action superhero” when he plays for the club after joining from Lyon.

Newcastle produced one of the deals of the January transfer window when they managed to secure the signing of the Brazilian for a fee of £40m.

They are preparing to unleash all of their new signings on the Premier League as Eddie Howe’s side bid to remain in the top-flight.

The Magpies secured the signings of Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Chris Wood in addition to Guimaraes in the winter window.

Of course, a number of those additions are functional players who will hope to bring both experience of the Premier League and knowhow when it comes to beating the drop.

Guimaraes, by comparison, has been parachuted in from a European club for his first taste of English football.

He had been with Lyon since the 2019/20 season and made 71 appearances for the club but he will now hope to adjust to life in England, with the Brazil international likely to make his debut against Everton on Tuesday.

And Jones has now revealed that he will not simply be sitting in front of the defence and spraying passes around, with Guimaraes instead expected to get up and down the pitch and affect proceedings in the final third.

He told GiveMeSport: “I heard that people around Newcastle think that we might actually see a different player here to what a lot of people are expecting.

“Typically I think people would expect him to be playing more of a defensive midfield role and maybe dictating from deep, but there’s a feeling that he might have to be more than that in this Newcastle team. That becomes Jonjo Shelvey still, and Bruno Guimaraes becomes more like an all-action
