Newcastle: Exciting teenager already a 'standout' at St James' Park

Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson can act as a source of inspiration to the club’s other promising academy prospects, after recently breaking into the first team at St James’ Park, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Eddie Howe has overseen an impressive start to the season in the North East and one youngster is starting to catch the eye more and more as the weeks tick by.

Last season, the 19-year-old spent the second half of the campaign on loan with Bristol Rovers in League Two, scoring eight goals in 21 games and providing a further five assists as they were promoted.

He was brought into the Newcastle first-team fold by Howe during pre-season and the Magpies boss was wowed by the youngster.

“I’ve been really impressed by him,” Howe said in the summer. “He’s quite quiet within the group, but is a very steely, determined lad who wants to do well. We really like him.

“He looks like he has the ability now to go box-to-box to compete in and out of possession, also in duels and cover ground. We’ve seen a real growth in his endurance levels.”

This season has seen him progress further still, with Anderson appearing off the bench in the club’s last three Premier League games.

Jones believes that Anderson can act as a source of inspiration to his former under-21 teammates.

The journalist says that the Scotland youth international has shown that it is still possible to break into the first team even when the club are in possession of new-found spending powers.
