Newcastle: 80-cap star 'could become available' for St James' Park move

Newcastle United are not the only club interested in striking a deal for Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as the St James’ Park target also has suitors in Germany and Italy, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Eddie Howe was appointed as the Magpies’ head coach last November and, ahead of his first full season at the helm, could look to take advantage of the summer window.

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle are tracking Schmeichel’s situation as Howe is keen to recruit a new first-choice shot-stopper.

The report suggests the 80-cap Denmark international could be a high-profile departure from Leicester as he is keen to enjoy regular European action.

While continental football would not currently be on offer at St James’ Park, due to Newcastle sitting adrift of the Premier League’s top seven, there appears to be a bright future on Tyneside.

That is because the Magpies became the richest club in world football after the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund completed a £305million takeover last October.

Schmeichel, meanwhile, is set to enter the final 12 months of his Leicester contract – which is worth £130,000-per-week – in the summer.

Jones believes Newcastle are not Schmeichel’s only admirer as overseas clubs are also mulling over whether to test Leicester’s resolve.

The transfer insider feels Brendan Rodgers’ side may be forced to cash-in on the 35-year-old when the summer window opens for business.
