New Wolves boss Gary O'Neil will hope to repeat familiar trick vs Manchester United

Wolves have appointed a new manager ahead of their Premier League opener with Manchester United.

Gary O'Neil has been handed a three-year deal by Wolves and replaces Julen Lopetegui in the role. United host Wolves on Monday evening at Old Trafford as the two sides begin their top flight campaign.

O'Neil was last in management last season at Bournemouth, leading the Cherries to safety upon their return to the Premier League. Despite this, the Dorset club made the decision to part company with O'Neil.

O'Neil will be seeking three points at Old Trafford and will no doubt be hoping history repeats itself from when he was a player. In December 2015, he was part of a Norwich City side claimed a shock 2-1 win over United at the Theatre of Dreams, thanks to goals from Cameron Jerome and Alexander Tettey.

And speaking before he took Bournemouth to Old Trafford in January, which United ended up winning 3-0 thanks to goals from Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford, O'Neil outlined how he hoped to recreate those memories. It is something he will no doubt also be hoping to do with Wolves on Monday evening.

He said: “It was a good day. It’s a tough place to go and I didn’t have many successes there.

“Norwich were newly-promoted and in a relegation battle so to go there and get a victory was big for us. It was a special feeling, hopefully, we can recreate that on Tuesday.”
