New Wishaw boss admits relief as he gets first point on the board

Wishaw boss Aaron Connolly admits his side are relieved to get their first point on the board since his arrival at the Beltane last month.

The new gaffer suffered 3-0 defeats to Dalry Thistle and Threave Rovers over the last fortnight, but he got off the mark on Friday night with a 1-1 draw at Glasgow University in the West of Scotland Third Division.

Ryan McGregor’s stunning strike in the first half was cancelled out after the break, but the draw gave rock-bottom Wishy their second point of the season, moving them to within two points of nearest rivals Irvine Victoria.

Connolly said: “The boys will feel that relief to get that point on the board. We had two tough games before Friday where we performed reasonably well but we were on the end of two defeats, which we probably deserved.

“But on Friday I thought we were really good, particularly in the first half. We looked a lot more like the team I want us to be, in terms of how we approach the game, playing through the thirds and trying to be more aggressive with our attacking play.

“I thought we edged the first half and deserved to have the lead at half-time.

“Fair play to Glasgow Uni, they came out in the second half and they were really good, really fit and tried to play football in an attacking way.

“They put us under a fair bit of pressure in the second half and I thought we ran out of legs a wee bit.

“Credit to our players, they stuck to the task well, limited Glasgow to few opportunities and got themselves a point - which is a just reward for their efforts over the last few weeks.
