New England shirt poll: Have your say as St George's Cross flag kit row escalates

The new England kits that the Three Lions will wear at this summer's European Championships have caused controversy after critics took issue with Nike's design of the shirts.

Nike has changed the traditional St George's Cross - which features on the back of the collar - to purple and blue stripes in what the sports manufacturing giant has called the change a "playful update" to the flag. But the move has been criticised in some quarters, fuelling a debate neither England nor the FA could have envisaged in the run-up to international break friendlies against Brazil (March 23) and Belgium (March 26).

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said kit manufacturers "should not mess" with the St George’s Cross, while Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has also questioned the decision. However, England players including Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Phil Foden have praised the new design. Saka has called it "unbelievable" while Foden has said it is his "favourite so far."

The FA has since defended the new kit, saying "it is not the first time" different colours have been used. A spokesperson said: "The new England 2024 home kit has a number of design elements which were meant as a tribute to the 1966 World Cup-winning team.

"The coloured trim on the cuffs is inspired by the training gear worn by England's 1966 heroes, and the same colours also feature on the design on the back of the collar. It is not the first time that different coloured St George's Cross-inspired designs have been used on England shirts.
