Neil Lennon fumes as Celtic suffer red card fury over floored Reo Hatate and 'shocking' Elseid Hysaj bump

Neil Lennon has been left stunned that Celtic weren't playing against 10 men for the majority of their Champions League clash with Lazio.

Pedro's goal in the 95th minute sealed a gutting 2-1 defeat for Brendan Rodgers' side, who thought they had got themselves into a winning position 13 minutes earlier through Luis Palma's effort but that was ruled out by VAR for offside. Kyogo had put them ahead but before Matias Vecino's leveller, a flashpoint emerged between Reo Hatate and Lazio's Elseid Hysaj.

The right-back appeared to catch the midfielder in the face with a flailing arm and former referee Steve Conroy was adamant it was a sending off offence. Former boss Lennon was reviewing the incident post-match on TNT Sports and fumed to host Emma Dodds and ex-teammate Stiliyan Petrov that red should have emerged from the ref’s pocket. He vented: "It's shocking. The more I look at it the more I find it's a red card.

"It's a forearm in Hatate's face. There's a little bump and then bang, he knows exactly what he is doing. For me, you may deem that as accidental but it's still reckless. What they are looking at I don't know."

Petrov got the ball rolling in the debate and the assessment was a mirror image of Lennon's. He admitted: "Definitely a red card. You can see the intention there, you can see the player knows what he is doing. It definitely had to be looked at."
