Christoph Daum reveals Celtic regret as legendary German boss opens up on missed Parkhead opportunity

German boss Christoph Daum has revealed his biggest regret in football was turning down the chance to become manager of Celtic.

The former Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Eintracht Frankfurt, Cologne, Fenerbahce, Brugge and Romania boss turns 70 on Monday. He was offered the chance to take charge of Celtic after Neil Lennon resigned from his first stint as Hoops boss in 2014.

But he opted to reject the opportunity because he wanted a break from football before eventually accepting the Romania job two years later. Celtic appointed Ronny Deila instead. And looking back at his career, he accepts that was his biggest regret.

Daum said: "Rejecting the chance to manage Celtic was my biggest sporting mistake in my life. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware that Celtic are one of the biggest clubs in the world. But I look back on my career with gratitude."

Daum only lasted just over a year as Romania boss before he was sacked in 2017 and has not managed another club or country since.
