Neighbours heard 'shouts' amid desperate attempts to save tragic man who 'slipped' into water

Desperate attempts were made to save a man's life after he 'slipped' into water in a quiet Saddleworth village. Residents heard 'shouting' as people rushed to help pull the man from Chew Brook, near to Waters Edge in Greenfield, late last night (August 23).

Emergency services raced to the scene at around 11.20pm and the man was rushed to hospital, where he was sadly later pronounced dead. Officers taped off a footpath off Waters Edge at Chew Brook, close to where it meets River Tame.

Police remained at the scene until around 11am today (Thursday). One person living close to the scene recalled hearing a commotion as urgent attempts were made to rescue the man from Chew Brook.

"There was a lot going," he told the Manchester Evening News. "There was a lot of noise.

"People had obviously seen somebody in the water and tried to get him out. When they did I don’t think he was responding."

Police arrived at the scene 'very quickly' as attempts were made to save the man. The resident added: "I was surprised about how quickly they got there."

Another neighbour added: "It was just a lot of shouting going on. We thought it was just young kids, but it wasn't.

"We realised when they said somebody was in the water." Other residents in the picturesque Saddleworth neighbourhood were unaware of what happened until they woke to find emergency services still at the scene this morning.

"It was past our bedtime," one told the M.E.N. "There was red tape just up at the back and one police car, that's all we saw."
