The librarian from Manchester who changed her life through learning and dedication

A mother from Manchester managed to change her life through hard work and becoming a librarian.

Ioana Hayder, 41, opted to become a librarian and took part in lessons to help improve her English language and math thanks to help from Manchester Adult Education Service (MAES)

The mother of three, who lives in north Manchester, has now managed to land the role of library assistant at Manchester Libraries thanks to the skills she learned.

Ioana, originally from Romania, said: “I thought I could speak English but then when we arrived, I didn't understand what people were saying to me, I used to dread speaking on the phone.

“I was terrified of having to call people like the doctors because I didn't understand properly what they were saying and was scared of trying to make myself understood.”

Ioana described herself as a ‘good student’ while in Romania, however, she found the English utterly different than what she had been prepared for.

Ioana’s move to Manchester wasn’t an easy one. With three kids in her care as well as not knowing anyone in the city and several lockdowns during COVID, Ioana decided to make the change.

Ioana ended up completing her Level Two English Language course through MAES and decided to do Maths afterwards eventually completing her Level One Maths course.

She also sat her GCSE English Language exam earlier this year in which she achieved a grade seven and completed a Digital Skills Level one course.

Ioana stated: "This was a very good course and I recommend it to everyone. I used to be terrified of job interviews, but after doing the course I felt much more confident about them, and I think it really helped
