Neco Williams' complicated Liverpool situation after failed transfer bid

Liverpool have reportedly rejected a bid of £11million from recently promoted side Nottingham Forest for right-back Neco Williams.

The Welsh international spent the final months of last season on loan at Fulham and helped them to cruise to promotion up to the Premier League for the third time in the space of five seasons.

It was Williams’ first loan exit in his career having spent 13 years on Liverpool ’s books, but it is thought that Williams wants to be playing regular football in the opening months of the 2022/23 campaign as he looks to nail down a place in Wales’ national side for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which starts in November.

The Sun have reported that Forest submitted a bid of £11m to sign Williams permanently as they look to replace impressive loanee Djed Spence, who has returned to Middlesbrough and is expected to complete a move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

However, Liverpool have rejected the offer to sign Williams, which reportedly included a further £4m in add-ons, making his future more uncertain ahead of the start of the season.

Earlier this month, Jurgen Klopp’s side completed the signing of 18-year-old right-back Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen in a deal worth around £4m, although it could later rise to £6.5m in add-ons. It is a move which leaves the Reds well-stocked in that area and leaves Williams' future complicated.

The arrival of Ramsey certainly appears to indicate that Williams could depart Anfield one way or another this summer, something he is said to be keen to do ahead of the World Cup. However, their decision to reject Forest's opening bid indicates he will only be able to leave on Liverpool's terms.

Whether that will be on a temporary basis or for a higher fee to leave
