Nathaniel Mendez-Laing 'set to leave' Sheffield Wednesday after turning down contract offer

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing looks set to leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer after turning down a new contract, according to BBC Sheffield’s Rob Staton .

The winger signed for Wednesday in November 2021 after impressing on a trial, and has since picked up two goals and three assists in 19 League One matches. The original contract ran only until the end of January, but this was extended to keep the 30-year-old at the club until the end of the season.

And now, amid reported interest from a host of Championship clubs including promoted Wigan Athletic, Mendez-Laing has turned down a fresh offer of another season at Hillsborough.

The club confirmed when posting their retained list that they had offered a new contract to the former Wolves, Peterborough and Cardiff man, but he looks set to snub that offer.

He started neither of the playoff semi-finals against Sunderland, warming the bench for the first-leg and coming on for the final 20 minutes in the return leg defeat.
