Nathan Jones addresses Luton Town’s Deadline Day interest in Sheffield United player

Nathan Jones has revealed the finances complicated a Deadline Day move for Sheffield United midfielder Luke Freeman, in conversation with Luton Today.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon reported that the Hatters were interested in a move for the 29-year-old in the early afternoon, however, it was Millwall who eventually secured his temporary services.

Freeman, who is vastly experienced at Championship level, has struggled for regular first-team minutes this season with the Blades, playing just 141 minutes of league football.

Speaking to Luton Today about Deadline Day and addressing the Freeman rumours, Jones said: “Luke Freeman we would have liked to have done.

“I know Luke, I’ve played with Luke, I’ve been an admirer of Luke, he’s been fantastic, it’s just we couldn’t get near the finances for him, so that was that.

“We probably wanted to add a left-footed midfield player to our ranks as that’s the only thing we haven’t got, that’s why we’ve probably been linked with Harvey White, but there was no enquiry for Harvey White.

“For Luke Freeman there was because he’s different to what we have, really, really different.

“I know him, great character, he wanted to come, it’s just we couldn’t get near the finances and that’s basically all on that.”

The verdict

Signing Freeman would have been a statement of intent as the Hatters chase down a play-off spot, whilst his addition would have increased the competitiveness in the squad.

The 29-year-old has a wand of a left foot and would have certainly added an extra dimension to Luton’s forward play.

Freeman could be a big hit at Millwall, as he will take some of the creative press off the shoulders of Jed Wallace.

Jones has admitted that a left-footed midfielder was desired at Kenilworth Road
