Napoli fan shot dead and more than 200 injured amid wild Serie A celebrations

A man has died while more than 200 were injured during wild celebrations in Naples following Napoli’s first Serie A title for 33 years.

Thousands flocked to the streets as fireworks lit up the night sky in southern Italy after Luciano Spalletti’s men earned a 1-1 draw away to Udinese to give them an unassailable 16-point lead at the top of the Italian league. However, police revealed that one man died from gunshot wounds although said it wasn’t to do with the festivities. Vincenzo Costanzo, 26, was fatally injured after being hit by a bullet fired from a gun but police chief Claudio Palomba said the fatality had “nothing to do with the celebrations,” adding: “the organisational plan worked and the authorities maintained order.”

Paramedics were called to the Ponticelli area of Naples and medical authorities said 203 people had been treated for injuries following the win. It was the first time Napoli had won the Serie A title since the days of Diego Maradona.
