Mum's heartbreak as one of her twin boys dies in the womb

A mum who fell pregnant with twins has opened up on her traumatic experience after losing one of her babies. Jessica Bruce, 32, was thrilled when she found out she was expecting identical twin boys last year.

But a 16-week scan at Hull Royal Infirmary showed they could have twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). She was referred to the St George's Hospital in London where the diagnosis was confirmed. It meant one twin was receiving too much blood and the other not enough.

"At 16 weeks, I went to Hull Royal for a scan and they noticed one of the babies was really, really small and didn't have enough fluid," Jessica told Hull Live: "They said I had to go down to London St George's Hospital because they are specialists in TTTS.

"I had to drive down to London and the doctors confirmed it was TTTS and told me there was a five per cent for chance for Isaac to survive and a 75pc chance for Cody. They gave me a percentage of 25pc that I'd lose the entire pregnancy."

Jessica said she was also offered the chance of terminating the pregnancy because it was now classed as very high risk. "But I made the risk of keeping the pregnancy and having the laser surgery to split the placenta," she said.

The procedure is very specialised and Jessica had to return to London St George's Hospital to have it done. "At 16 weeks plus one they did the laser surgery. I was under local anesthetic and I was awake for it and it was very scary seeing them separate the placenta."

Sadly, the smaller twin Isaac died not long after. "You have to continue the whole pregnancy with one baby who is not alive," said Jessica.
