Motherwell spread Christmas cheer on visit to children's ward at Wishaw hospital

Motherwell Football Club helped spread some Christmas cheer at University Hospital Wishawl last week, as manager Stuart Kettlewell and his players handed out presents to children facing a tough time this festive period.

First team players including club captain Liam Kelly, striker Mika Biereth plus defenders Bevis Mugabi and Paul McGinn took time out of their day to spend time on the ward.

The team spent an afternoon handing out selection boxes and toys, including 50 teddies from MFC Community Club.

Boss Kettlewell said: “There is a real willingness from us to connect with the community.

“At this time of the year, when you see some of the young children that are not keeping in good health, I feel it is our place to go and try and lift their spirits a bit.

“It is a humbling experience more than anything and we are just glad to be here to add a little bit to what is a tough time for people.

“How receptive the staff are here is

incredible. They’ve welcomed us in and the families and children have as well.”

Kelly said: “In football, you think you are going through a difficult period but this is obviously a totally different level. It is good to do our bit, put some smiles on faces and make their Christmas that bit better.

“Hopefully the kids can get out for Christmas.”

McGinn added: “I have got two kids myself and it is your worst nightmare if they are unwell. The kids are so strong and I have a lot of admiration for them.

“It is a nice thing to do for them but, at the same time, it is tough to see them struggling. It’s good to give back.”
