Met Office forecasts snow in UK before big shift

Flurries of snow are set to fall on parts of the UK before temperatures climb later this week. Much of the UK has been covered by grey skies over the past week, with 'anticyclonic gloom' meaning a lack of sunshine.

But the Met Office expects changing conditions across the country over the next few days. Some eastern parts of England saw snowfall over the weekend, and other areas are likely to follow today (February 17) and tomorrow.

Western areas of Scotland are expected to see snow throughout Monday morning and afternoon, followed by areas of higher ground in the east of Scotland in the evening. Further, lighter flurries are expected on Tuesday.

The Met Office says that in areas of highest ground, there could be up to 20cm of snow in the next couple of days. Other areas above 100m could see between 1cm and 3cm of snow.

Temperatures will climb from Wednesday onwards, to figures well above average for the time of year. South-west England will be the first area to see double-digit temperatures on Wednesday afternoon, with highs of 11C expected in parts of Devon and Cornwall.

Those figures will climb further on Thursday and spread across the country, with highs of 13C or 14C expected in some places. Double-figure temperatures are currently forecast to continue into the start of next week.

They stand well above the average maximum temperatures of 6C to 9C across the UK for February. Some rain is expected this week in western areas, with eastern parts of the country likely to be dry.
