Mats Hummels mooted for audacious Celtic transfer swoop with approach for Germany icon 'worth a phone call'

Mats Hummels has been been tipped for a shock move to Celtic summer signing by an bullish radio caller - and a former Hoops player doesn't believe it's totally out of the question.

The 2014 World Cup winning centre back is currently a free agent after ending his second spell with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer, with his final appearance for the club coming in a 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League final. Hummels, 35, is attracting the interest of several clubs around Europe, as well as in the Saudi Pro League.

But one optimistic Celtic punter has urged his team to make an approach for the Germany icon. who has also won five Bundesliga titles during his illustrious career. Ex Parkhead youth player and longtime SPFL manager Jim Duffy applauded the fan for his ambition and reckons trying to prize the veteran defender up to Glasgow's East End is "worth a phone call."

Speaking on Clyde Superscoreboard, Duffy said: "I understand all that (wage demands) but I don't think it'd do any harm in terms of a marquee signing, going and trying to get hims. And you can make it public and say, 'We've been trying to get this type of player'.

"Now if he decides not to go for financial reasons or football reasons or other Premier League clubs come in or whatever it happens to be, then fine. But throw your hat in the ring, put yourself in the mix to see a player like that, can you attract them?

"Of course you're gonna have to throw a considerable sum of money at him but I don't mind the idea. I don't think it'll happen, it's very difficult to attract that type of player into Scottish football, but why not give it a go? It's worth a phone call."
