Matheus Cunha just proved popular theory about Manchester United wrong
On Thursday, Manchester United officially confirmed their first signing of the summer.
United announced an agreement to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5million on the opening day of the window, but the player's visa needed to be approved before the deal could be sealed.
The red tape has now been lifted and the transfer has been formally completed. Cunha has signed a five-year contract and is the first new face through the door at Carrington this summer.
“It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player," Cunha said.
"Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother’s house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality.
“I can’t wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my teammates and prepare for the season ahead. All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top.”
If you take Cunha's comments about following United when he was a boy at face value, it shows why United will always appeal to transfer targets, regardless of the situation on the pitch.
The supporters of Premier League rivals suggested United would have no pull in the summer transfer window, but top players will always want to represent the biggest club in England.
Cunha received interest from other Premier League sides, but the Brazilian only entertained a move to Old Trafford. It still means something to play for United, which can be forgotten particularly after a nightmare season.
