Mason Greenwood's rocketing transfer price could leave Man United with £4.5m hole

Manchester United could lose out on a significant cut of any future transfer fee for Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood, 23, left United to join Ligue 1 side Marseille in the summer and has been in fine form for Roberto de Zerbi's side since, scoring 10 goals in sixteen appearances. Les Olympiens are second in the table, seven points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite his permanent exit from Old Trafford, it will be in United's best interests for Greenwood to continue his rich vein of form in front of goal as they inserted a hefty sell-on clause, reported to be 50 per cent, in the deal that took him to Stade Velodrome in July.

At a time when he has been linked with moves to La Liga trio Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, as well as Italian giants Juventus, CIES Football Observatory value Greenwood at £45m.

But United's cut of any future deal for Greenwood is set to be sliced by Getafe after The Athletic claimed the Spanish outfit are entitled to 20 per cent of any future fee the Old Trafford club receive for the 23-year-old.

The unusual sell-on clause was reportedly agreed when Greenwood joined the La Liga side on a season-long loan at the start of the 2023-24 season. Getafe earned £5.34m from the forward's move to France last summer.

Indeed, if Marseille sell Greenwood at the end of the season, United would owe 20 per cent of the sell-on fee they receive to Getafe. Should Marseille secure CIES Football Observatory's valuation of the player, United could pocket half of that fee - sending £22.5m to Old Trafford.

But 20 per cent of that £22.5m would then have to be passed onto Getafe, dealing United a £4.5m blow. The forward is contracted to Marseille until June 2029.

Greenwood could be set for a United reunion
