Erik ten Hag could be set for immediate managerial return after Man United decision

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag could be set for a return to management after Borussia Dortmund sacked Nuri Sahin.

The 36-year-old had come under increasing pressure at Signal Iduna Park after suffering three consecutive defeats in the Bundesliga at the beginning of the calendar year. The former midfielder's misery was complete on Tuesday night as Serie A side Bologna came from behind to beat Dortmund in the Champions League.

Going into the European showdown, the German club were looking to make a huge stride to securing qualification for the round of 16. However, there were reports over Sahin's future with Ten Hag deemed a "serious contender", following a report from Sky Germany.

On Wednesday, Florian Plettenberg reported that Sahin had been sacked by Dortmund, in a tweet he said: "Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with Nuri #Sahin! The team and coaching staff were informed at the hotel in Bologna during the night."

Soon after the club confirmed that they would be going their separate ways. In a statement, they said: "Borussia Dortmund and Nuri Sahin are going their separate ways with immediate effect.

"BVB has released its head coach following the disappointing 1:2 defeat in the UEFA Champions League at FC Bologna on Tuesday evening."

Speaking after the 2-1 in northern Italy, sporting director Lars Ricken said: "I think today or tomorrow we will sit down. The game is too fresh. It is clear we have to win games but now have lost four in a row. We will see.

"We need wins. We need results. Now we've won once in nine games. I have a very trusting and good relationship with Nuri. He always has my backing, but of course my statements stand."
