Mason Greenwood handed international lifeline as boss 'would love' to have England cap in his team

Jamaica boss Heimir Hallgrimsson says he would "love" to have Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood play for his team. Greenwood, who is currently on loan at Getafe, has played for England once before in a match against Iceland in September 2020.

However, it's unlikely he'll be called up by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024 this June. The 22-year-old moved to Getafe after charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.

Greenwood could play for Jamaica because his dad, Andrew, is Jamaican. There have been reports that the Jamaican Football Federation (JFF) would like Greenwood to play for them instead of England. Under FIFA rules, Greenwood could change which country he plays for. At a CONCACAF Nations League event in Dallas on Tuesday, Hallgrimsson confirmed he's thought about having Greenwood on his team.

"I really don't like to talk about 'what if', but this, of course, has come to our mind," the Icelandic coach told the Athletic, reports the Mirror. "I would love to have him in my team. Like all coaches, I would like to have the best players in our team, but it's always up to the player himself if he wants to do it."

Since joining Getafe, Greenwood has been playing well, scoring seven goals and setting up five more. There's even talk he might go to Barcelona in the summer. But Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who now helps run United, says they'll think about what to do with Greenwood when the season ends.

"We will make a decision, correct," Ratcliffe said recently. "All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if is he a good person or not?
