Rocco Vata 'wanted' by Watford as Celtic exit talk escalates despite bumper new Parkhead contract offer

Watford reportedly hold a "firm" interest in Rocco Vata despite details emerging over the new Celtic contract offer on the table for the Parkhead prospect.

Hoops chiefs have held regular dialogue with the young striker’s representatives at CAA Base in recent weeks amid rising interest in the 18-year-old as his Celtic contract nears an end. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has also spoken personally with the teenager in a bid to get him to sign a new long-term contract, and The Athletic now report that a deal that would keep Vata at Parkhead until 2027 is on the table.

English Championship side Watford are the latest side reportedly keeping close tabs on the Ireland U21 international with his deal set to expire. Como, Bologna and Sampdoria are all said to have shown an interest in the January window but he remained with the Scottish Premiership champions. The Hoops have turned down all approaches and made it clear they want Vata to extend his stay.

Having made his first senior appearance in December 2022, Vata burst into the Celtic first-team earlier this year following the winter break. He scored his first senior goal in the Scottish Cup victory over Buckie Thistle.

Since then, he has made just a three-minute cameo in the 1-1 draw with Aberdeen at the start of February. Vata is understood to be keen on ramping up his senior football minutes having been a regular for the B team in the Lowland League.

If a move to Watford is completed Celtic would land a meagre six-figure development fee. The compensation owed by Watford would be around £239,000 as the Hornets are a category two club in England.
