Marvin Johnson sends five-word message to Sheffield Wednesday supporters during pre-season

Sheffield Wednesday got their pre-season preparations underway with a 0-0 draw at Alfreton Town on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls will want to put their play-off semi final defeat to Sunderland swiftly to the back of supporters’ minds in 2022/23, with the club already completing some exciting new signings.

Michael Smith, Michael Ihiekwe, Will Vaulks, Ben Heneghan and David Stockdale have strengthened Darren Moore’s ranks, with the Owls up there with Ipswich Town as favourites to kick on towards automatic promotion.

Marvin Johnson enjoyed an excellent second half to 2021/22 at left wing back, and the former Middlesbrough man took to Instagram to reflect on the Owls’ pre-season curtain-raiser against Alfreton.

He wrote: “First 45 in the tank.”

One area that Wednesday probably still have a way to go in, looking at recruitment, is in defence, but as it stands Johnson is one of the first names on the team sheet at left wing back.

Moore’s men were amongst the most dangerous in the division in the second half of last term with a three at the back formation, and the role does suit Johnson’s style of play both in and out of possession.

The Verdict

It is hard to read too much into pre-season with players slowly building their fitness back up and getting used to playing with new team-mates.

Jaden Brown is the most dangerous player in the Wednesday squad at the moment, as far as Johnson’s starting berth is concerned, with some of the forward options that the Owls had last term departing at the end of their deals or returning to parent clubs.
