Tyreeq Bakinson details reasons behind leaving Bristol City to join Sheffield Wednesday

Tyreeq Bakinson is relishing the prospect of playing in front of big crowds at Hillsborough after joining Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee from Bristol City. The midfielder is the club’s eighth summer addition ahead of the up-and-coming season.

Bakinson will train with his new team-mates for the first time today. The former Luton Town youngster has previously scored at Hillsborough. His stunning late strike earned the Robins a point when the two clubs met in the Championship back in April 2021.

Speaking to the Owls' YouTube channel, Bakinson said: "I am buzzing. It has always been a great atmosphere when I have played at Hillsborough. It is not as good as when you play against them. Hopefully it will be much better this time because they will be on my side!"

The 23-year-old is delighted to have joined the Owls on a permanent basis, having fallen out of favour at Ashton Gate. He spent part of last term on loan at Ipswich Town. He returned to City in the summer but has not figured in their pre-season programme.

"I want to play some football and that obviously wasn't happening where I was so it is really great to get this deal done and over the line," said Bakinson. With his long-term future secure, Bakinson hopes to put down a few roots at Wednesday.

"I think that is what most players want," he said. "They want to find a home and where they can play in front of loads of fans and play the right sort of football and that is exactly what is possible here."
