Sheffield Wednesday are on the brink of signing Bristol City midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson

Sheffield Wednesday are close to making Tyreeq Bakinson their eighth summer signing. Yorkshire Live understands the Owls are in advanced discussions with the Bristol City midfielder over a permanent switch to Hillsborough.

Assuming there are no late hitches, Bakinson could be unveiled as a Wednesday player in the next 24 hours. Bakinson has fallen out of favour at Ashton Gate under Nigel Pearson.

The 23-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town. He scored two goals in 14 starts and three substitute appearances for the Tractor Boys as they finished in the top half of League One. Ipswich opted against taking up their option to bring in Bakinson on a full-time basis and he returned to Bristol following the end of the 2021/22 campaign. He has been deemed surplus to requirements at City and has trained with the club's Under-23s in pre-season.

His impending move to Wednesday will further increase competition for places in the middle of the park. Bakinson would join an Owls squad that already has Will Vaulks, Barry Bannan, George Byers, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Dennis Adeniran and Alex Hunt as central midfield options.

Wednesday chief Darren Moore refused to comment on speculation linking the club with Bakinson. Speaking after last night's 2-0 pre-season friendly loss to Rayo Vallecano, Moore told Yorkshire Live: "I won't talk about individuals. With players under contract, it is not the professional way to do it. They are not our players to talk about.

"I will let all you guys (the media) talk about all the speculation and that will be that."

Moore said there was "no news to report" on the transfer front but added: "Twenty four hours is a long time in football."
