Margate striker Tom Derry nets in 3-1 pre-season friendly win at Newmarket Town - before also coming up trumps at Newmarket Racecourse

Margate striker Tom Derry was a happy man after their friendly win at the weekend - and even happier a few hours later.

Derry rounded off the scoring in Gate’s 3-1 pre-season victory at Isthmian North Newmarket in sweltering conditions.

Margate’s squad then shot off to Newmarket Racecourse and the 30-year-old came up trumps once more.

Player-manager Ben Greenhalgh said: “Tom Derry, I think, had our biggest winner.

“I don’t think we had any out-and-out horse racing tipsters but there was one race where the 66-1 horse won!

“Tom scored again on Saturday - and then scored with the horses, as well!”

Isthmian South East side Gate made the short journey to the races after their midday kick-off.

Greenhalgh said: “We got there at about 2.30pm, which was good.

“We managed to catch three or four races and it was good to have a bit of a relaxing vibe.

“We have always had a very good team culture. Whenever someone comes into the group, they’re really welcomed.

“It was good, just spending time together off the pitch. That creates a better atmosphere and better vibes in the dressing room.

“I’m sure there will be other opportunities to get together.

“Sometimes, you see your football group as much as you see your family when you’re going Saturday-to-Tuesday-to-Saturday during the season.

“That’s why we need to understand each other and get along off the pitch - as well as on it.”

Derry got Gate’s third goal at Newmarket after Greenhalgh and striker Ibrahim Olutade had struck in the first nine minutes. The key pair had missed the opening pre-season friendly - a 3-2 home loss against Tonbridge.
