Marcus Rashford statement is good news for Rasmus Hojlund at Manchester United

Manchester United are finally signing a striker, but Rasmus Hojlund alone will likely not be enough to solve their attacking issues.

The Denmark international has passed his medical ahead of a potential transfer unveiling this weekend, and although he is highly rated, expectations must be eased for a player still so raw on the biggest stages of all.

United needed a new striker even before Cristiano Ronaldo's departure last November, and they certainly didn't manage to address that with the loan addition of Wout Weghorst.

Even if Hojlund is a success in his debut season, United will still need more than his goals to close the gap on the Premier League's very best, if he takes time to adapt, that need will be even greater.

United scored 103 goals across all competitions last season, though those numbers are somewhat misleading given the sheer number of games the club played across a bumper 62-game campaign.

A fairer reflection of their attacking output is that they managed just 58 goals in the Premier League, joint-seventh in the table, behind the likes of Tottenham and Brighton in the list; only seven more than relegated Leicester.

They finished 36 goals, or one Erling Haaland, behind Man City's total, which highlights just how much work still needs to be done if they are to properly challenge for the title.

Of course, there is no guarantee Haaland will match his extraterrestrial output from last season, and there is also no guarantee that Marcus Rashford will be able to match his either.
