Manchester United will have to wait to secure Cody Gakpo and more transfer rumours

Manchester United will reportedly have to wait until after this summer's World Cup to discover the fate of transfer target Cody Gakpo, with the Netherlands international declaring that he will wait until after the tournament to decide his next club.

The Dutchman, as reported by The Athletic, says that he had expected to join the club during the summer window before the Red Devils opted to sign Ajax winger Antony instead. However, Gakpo's six goals in his opening five Eredivisie appearances this season could see the forward subject to renewed interest from United boss Erik ten Hag.

The forward spoke to PSV TV on Friday, saying that he was confident of a move to Old Trafford right up until the closing days of the window. He explained: “Manchester United had reported at the beginning of the transfer window. We were waiting for that a bit.

“The signals became more and more positive and at a certain point I thought it might fall in that direction." He added. “That option faded a bit and completely last week. We worked the whole window towards it. Until last week, I thought I would go to Manchester United.

“In the last week I looked at all options. In the end PSV came up with a good offer and that turned out to be the right choice for me.” These comments suggest that a new deal could be in the offing for the 23-yea-old, but with his current form it could well be the case that United return for the winger.

Meanwhile, another striking option could emerge in the wake of the World Cup, with United expected to make a move to sign Napoli's Victor Osimhen in January for what could be a whopping £85 million.
