Manchester United wage bill rises to £90m

Manchester United posted record first quarter revenues of £157.1million but also recorded a loss of £25.8m for the first quarter ended September 30 2023.

Wages have also risen by 9.7% to £90.3m after United qualified for the Champions League and signed seven players in the summer transfer window.

United players had their salary reduced by 25% after they failed to finish in the top four in the 2021-22 season. United finished bottom of Group A, winning one of their six Champions League group games.

Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund joined for a fee totalling £179.2million, including add-ons. United also paid an £8.5m loan fee for Sofyan Amrabat.

United have also lowered their financial forecast for 2024 due to their absence from European competitions for the second half of the season.

Due to the pressures of financial fair play, United were more proactive selling senior players in the summer and banked £29.5m from the sales of Anthony Elanga, Fred and Dean Henderson, an increase of 77.7%.

Sources say United's first quarter revenues were driven by record matchday, broadcasting and commercial numbers, which increased over the previous year quarter.

United also recorded record ticket sales, attendances and have a global membership of over 400,000. The club also announced a new partnership with Wow Hydrate and renewed deals with Konami, Concho Y Toro and Mlily.

Net capital investment doubled to £9.1m as United enhanced facilities for the women's team and the academy at their Carrington training complex.
