Manchester United star Harry Maguire will be judged by his actions and not his words

The opportunity to play for England has provided Harry Maguire with his most enjoyable moments over the last few years. Maguire has endured a couple of difficult chapters of his career at Manchester United, but he's continued to perform for England regardless of his situation at Old Trafford and that's why Gareth Southgate has stuck by him.

The defender has looked happiest when on international duty, although his reputation has followed him when he's played for the Three Lions and Scotland fans jeering his every touch last month was an example of that.

Southgate strongly criticised the treatment of Maguire after that game and he suggested Scotland fans only heckled Maguire as a consequence of the narrative around him, which has gradually built since the 2021/22 season.

The England manager was right to defend his player because the treatment of him has become ridiculous, but even United fans would say Maguire sometimes doesn't help himself with comments he makes in the media.

Maguire is a confident talker and he believes in his own ability, which is crucial, but it can often be best to do your talking on the pitch instead of making comments that could have the potential to be considered provocative.
