Manchester United stance on Hannibal Mejbri's future

Manchester United plan to hold discussions with Hannibal Mejbri about a new long-term contract.

Mejbri, 20, is out of contract in June but United are expected to trigger their one-year option to tie him to the club until 2025.

It is understood United do not regard Mejbri's future as an urgent issue due to the maximum expiry date of his deal but the club plan to progress with discussions over a renewal in the near future.

Mejbri joined United for €10million from Monaco as a 16-year-old in 2019 and he completed his first 90 minutes in the win over Burnley on Saturday.

The Tunisia international has appeared five times for the first team, having spent last season on loan with Birmingham City in the Championship.

Mejbri has effectively leapfrogged Donny van de Beek to become United's alternative playmaker to Bruno Fernandes, having excelled during pre-season prior to his opportunities in recent weeks.

The attacking midfielder scored his first goal for United in the 3-1 defeat to Brighton and manager Erik ten Hag was pleased with his impact at Turf Moor.

"We brought some energy in the team," Ten Hag explained. "The pressing of Rasmus Hojlund and Hannibal, the togetherness, how they start the moments of the pressing, the timing was very good. The togetherness with Bruno and Rashy was very good.

"We controlled the game in that spell because they started the pressing so well and once they were beaten, there was a recovery and Hannibal did that very good."
