Manchester United set to make 90% loss on Donny van de Beek in Girona transfer

Manchester United have agreed a meagre €4.5million fee to sell Donny van de Beek to Girona.

It is understood United have received a paltry €450,000 (£380,000) up front from the La Liga side and the deal could rise to €4.5m (£3.8m).

Van de Beek joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan in January but started only four matches and the German club declined their option to make the move permanent for €11m rising to €14m. United sources say Van de Beek's deal includes additional performance-related bonuses.

Van de Beek is out of contract next year and changed his representation back to former agent, Guido Albers, after a two-year spell as a client of Ali Dursun.

The 27-year-old started only six Premier League games in four years for United and was loaned to Everton in January 2022.

United bought Van de Beek from Ajax in September 2020 for £35m rising to £40m. The up-front fee from Girona is a little over 10% what United initially paid Ajax.

Van de Beek was shortlisted as a potential target by United in January 2020 but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to sign Jack Grealish or James Maddison.

United prioritised a move for Grealish before the Covid-19 pandemic and Maddison subsequently signed a new contract with Leicester City. The pandemic and Aston Villa's Premier League survival scuppered any move for Grealish, who eventually moved to Manchester City for £100m in 2021.

Van de Beek played 65 times for United but only 23 times as a starter, scoring twice. United manager Erik ten Hag brought on Van de Beek twice last season.
